SAILING

RYA LEVEL 1

RYA LEVEL 1 DINGHY– START SAILING

An introduction to sailing over two days, it follows the RYA syllabus and is a certificated course; RYA Logbook, handbook and certificate included.

The instructor will teach parts of the boat, rigging and de-rigging, launch and recovery, capsize theory (practical required at Level 2), how to steer, set the sails, tacking and gybing and sailing at all points to the wind. This course covers the minimum knowledge to get afloat under supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

No previous experience is required and non-swimmers are welcome.

£190 per course

Courses available over 1 weekend.

RYA LEVEL 2

A two-day course that follows the RYA syllabus, as outlined in the logbook and G4 National Sailing Scheme book. It aims to improve your skills in tacking, gybing, sailing upwind, downwind and improving understanding and use of the ‘Five Essentials’. Capsize drill is part of this course. This course develops the techniques to sail independently.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

RYA Level 1 with additional experience and ability to Level 1 or above.

£190 per course

Courses available over 1 weekend.

RYA Seamanship

Fairlop Outdoor Activity Centre offers four advanced two-day modules (dates for these courses are by arrangement): Seamanship Skills, Sailing with Spinnakers, Performance Sailing, Start Racing

CANOEING/KAYAKING

INTRODUCTION TO PADDLE SPORT (British Canoeing 1 STAR)

A full day course to give an introduction to the skills needed to move a canoe or kayak effectively on the water. The course will also cover some simple theory on safety and equipment. Demonstrating a controlled capsize and swim from a boat is likely to be a part of this course. Satisfactory completion of the syllabus on the day will lead to candidates being awarded their British Canoeing 1 Star award.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Some previous experience in canoes or kayaks may be useful but is not essential

BCU FOUNDATION SAFETY AND RESCUE TRAINING (FSRT)

A 1 day course to provide a good grounding in safety and rescue techniques for paddling in a flat water environment. Attendance on FSRT course is a requirement for those who want to register to take a BCU coaching award.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Candidates should be paddling at a 2 star standard in order to get the most from the award. Candidates should also be confident swimming wearing a buoyancy aid and be over the age of 14.

POWERBOATS

RYA LEVEL 2 POWERBOAT (INLAND)

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.
